Dynamic thermal modelling (TM59) calculations

PART O – OVERHEATING

All new dwellings that are constructed under the 2021 regulations are required to evidence that they comply with Part O Overheating requirements. This can be demonstrated in one of two ways;

  • SIMPLIFIED METHOD
  • DYNAMIC THERMAL MODELLING – CIBSE TM59 CALCULATIONS

Northgate Building Design Ltd are able to offer both of the above services.

SIMPLIFIED METHOD:

This method looks at two areas within a dwelling. The first is limiting solar gains and the second is reducing excess heat. Northgate Building Design Ltd can calculate both of these areas to determine whether the dwelling meets the necessary compliance requirements under the Simplified Method. A report is then produced that details the findings within this assessment.

DYNAMIC THERMAL MODELLING:

If a dwelling has failed the Simplified Method, then a Dynamic Thermal Model assessment can be carried out using CIBSE TM59 calculations. This is a standardized approach to predicting overheating. Northgate Building Design Ltd uses specialized software to draw a 3D model of the dwelling. This model is then used to determine potential overheating based on many aspects including, occupation, weather, lighting and zone activity. The assessment can also take into account other features that you may choose to add to your design, for example shading, or Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery. The Dynamic Thermal Model allows for more flexibility and as such can allow for the design of the dwelling to have minimal changes and therefore provide more opportunity to retain your original design.
